Why this is so we are unsure but we have 2 theories about why Southern Africa has so few African masks. First is that in Central and North Africa there are huge forests – as most African Masks are made from wood – this is a good source of raw material. Southern Africa has small savanna like trees – not great for carving masks. The other reason we can think of is that whilst North Africa was populated by tribes and Africans that did not move around – Southern African tribes and peoples were primarily nomadic. This did not allow them to set up permanent places of worship. They would also have had to carry the heavy African Masks from place to place.
